Hull House- 1889

U.S. Education System

Jane Addams and her friend Ellen Gates Starr founded Hull House in 1889 in Chicago, Illinois. It was the first settlement house in the U.S. There were a wide range of services in Hull House from Kindergarten classes, all the way to night school classes for adults. This building still provides education to children and families. Jane Addams because the second women in the U.S. to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.

One reason why I found this event in history to be interesting is that Jane Addams was the second women to win the Nobel Peace Prize. I find this very cool, in my opinion, because they gave this prize to a women who was involved in education. She was passionate about not only helping individuals, but also wanting each one of them to get an education and learn. Another reason I find Hull House interesting is because it is still around to this day. It has now become a museum that people can visit, still providing education and historical facts for people to learn. I also find it very interesting that this was the first settlement house in the U.S. It makes this event in history that much more valuable.

I think it would be very cool to go to Hull House in Chicago and take in all the historical facts that are there.

  1. Meeting the needs of the community requires vision and the ability to think beyond the current structure. These women did that. What will we do to make the world a better place by serving the community?
